Located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Haven Plaza Apartments provides 371 affordable homes for families and seniors. Recent capital improvements have enhanced the quality of life for residents through renovated lobbies and newly landscaped plaza gardens, while on-site amenities include parking garages and a neighborhood supermarket.

In response to Superstorm Sandy, Haven Plaza completed a comprehensive resiliency initiative anchored by the construction of a new 3,120-square-foot, two-story utility building. The facility houses critical infrastructure, including fuel storage systems, a gas booster pump, gas-fired boilers, and domestic hot water equipment. Additional resiliency upgrades included elevating utility systems above the floodplain and replacing rooftop mechanical equipment to better protect the property from future storm events.

The project also advanced Haven Plaza’s long-term sustainability and cost-saving objectives by converting the residential heating and domestic hot water systems from steam to more efficient natural gas service. Together, these improvements have strengthened the property’s resilience, reduced operating costs, and enhanced the long-term sustainability of this important affordable housing community.
